Millington, Tennessee located in the north-center of Shelby County, is 21 miles or 18 minutes from downtown Memphis, TN and 10 minutes north of I-40. The city offers a full range of services and has been certified as one of Tennessee´s "Three Star" communities (Communities recognized by the Governor for having achieved the highest levels of economic and community performance,) for 9 years.
With the departure of the naval Air Station, Millington´s population decreased from 17,886 in 1990 to 10,433 in 2000, according to the U.S. census. However, aside from the departure of the military personnel at the Air Station, Millington´s population has increased since 1990.
Founded in 1803, Millington, TN will begin holding monthly events to celebrate its bicentennial beginning in April 2002. During the past decade, the city has become home to the Naval Support Activity Mid-South and Ingram Micro.; the location of the Millington Municipal Airport, a regional airport with the third longest runway in the state; and the Millington and West Tennessee Regional Business centers.
Millington´s Current city limits encompass 20 square miles, and its annexation reserve area includes another 85 square miles.
Millington´s police and fire departments have an average response time of less than two minutes. During 2001, the Police Department´s Activity Report details 1 incident of homicide, 4 of sex offenses, 14 of robbery. And 64 of aggravated assault.
Its public schools are apart of the Shelby County Schools system. They include five elementary schools (E.A. Harrold, Jeter, Lucy, Millington East, and Millington South); one middle school ( Millington); and one high school (Millington). In addition, there are currently two private schools, Tipton-Rosemark Academy (K-12) and Faith Heritage Baptist School (K-10, currently), and two schools are set to open in the next few years, Lighthouse Fellowship School (K-9) and St. William Catholic School.
The total housing units listed in the 2000 census are 3,663 of which 1,707 are owner-occupied and 1,926 are renter-occupied. Millington offers homes to both first- time and move-up buyers, and was the site of the 2001 Vesta Home Show, which was hosted by the Memphis Area Home Builders Association. The average sale price of the 92 Millington homes reported to the Memphis Area Association of Realtors Multiple Listings Services (MLS) by Realtors as sold in 2001 was $109,911. From 1998 to 2001, the average price appreciation of homes sold in Millington, according to the MLS was8.1% per year.
